Both exterior and interior decorating lasted until the 16th century with significant achievements during the 13th century. Ornamentation included that taken from conquered enemies. For example, four bronze horses from Constantinople were set above the central door. Other spoils of war were displayed on the north and south facades.
A Byzantine chandelier hangs at the center of the nave and red lamps provide light in the side chapels. The paving is from the 12th century -its geometric mosaics depict birds and other animals. Like the Taj Mahal, the [G 03 / Basilica's] interior changes mood and atmosphere with the light and visitors are told to see it at different times for the best overall impression.
